Freedom From Want- Norman Rockwell

A large family gathered at a table for a holiday meal as the Turkey arrives at the table.

Freedom from Want is the third in a series of four oil paintings entitled Four Freedoms by Norman Rockwell. They were inspired by Franklin D. Roosevelt's State of the Union Address, known as Four Freedoms, delivered to the 77th United States Congress on January 6, 1941. In the early 1940s, Roosevelt's Four Freedoms themes were still vague and abstract to many, but the government used them to help boost patriotism. The Four Freedoms' theme was eventually incorporated into the Atlantic Charter, and it became part of the charter of the United Nations. The series of paintings ran in The Saturday Evening Post accompanied by essays from noted writers on four consecutive weeks: Freedom of Speech(February 20), Freedom of Worship (February 27), Freedom from Want (March 6), and Freedom from Fear (March 13). Eventually, the series was widely distributed in poster form and became instrumental in the U.S. Government War Bond Drive.-Wikipedia

Commentary by Dr. Don DeForge--Each Thanksgiving my blog concentrates on the wonders of Thanksgiving; how it has changed over the years; and how we can make it different this Thanksgiving.  Hundreds read my blog yet I never know how many I have reached or understand its purpose.

Each Thanksgiving it amazes me how much society has moved away from caring, sharing, helping, and loving to pleasures of self and immediate gratification. Family gatherings at Thanksgiving are for moments and then there is disbursement to electronic devices or football games.  Money has replaced love; material goods have replaced giving; and recreational drugs and alcohol have replaced finding ways to help others.

We forget those who give up their days to assist in shelters and soup kitchens........ [these individuals do this every day of their lives [not just on Thanksgiving and Christmas].  We ignore and forget the sacrifice of the military serving in danger areas around the world.  We do not help and many times forget the veterans returning from active duty with multiple disorders including PTSD and physical dismemberment or handicap.

Consider the words written below by some very special people:

"We all can 'act' a certain way for a brief period of time, for instance, on Thanksgiving, who of us hasn't had to 'act' like we just loved everyone at the table? This brief show of good behavior is not true character. Our character is who we are when no one is looking." Becky Van Volkinburg, God's Word, Your Voice

"Once you start practicing being grateful and thankful for things, people, and events....... you may notice that you start to attract more positive things, people, and events in your life."
Stephanie Conkle, Happy Person. Happy Life

"Thank you consists of just eight letters that form two of the most meaningful words in the English vocabulary."
Doborah Norville

Author Leo Buscaglia tells this story about his mother and their "misery dinner." It was the night after his father came home and said it looked as if he would have to go into bankruptcy because his partner had absconded with their firm’s funds. His mother went out and sold some jewelry to buy food for a sumptuous feast. Other members of the family scolded her for it. But she told them that "the time for joy is now, when we need it most, not next week." Her courageous act rallied the family."
-Christopher News Notes, August, 1993, www.sermonillustraitions.com "joy"

It's not enough to have lived. We should be determined to live for something. May I suggest that it be creating joy for others, sharing what we have for the betterment of personkind, bringing hope to the lost and love to the lonely.
