Don DeForge, VMD-Silver Sands Veterinary Twas the Night After Christmas 2015 Commentary from Dr. DeForge If there was ever a time that Virginia O'Hanlon's letter should be read....now is the night and now is the time. Children today are growing up in a world that is impersonal and many times lacking love.  The world is fast paced and "faceless" .......where a creed of violence and murder has become commonplace. Faith is a word that has lost its meaning...... and has been replaced with followers of a new religion of material pleasures. I have reprinted this newspaper article as part of my blog for many years now....usually before Christmas.....this year I have elected to bring it to you the night after Christmas.   The presents have been opened; the kids are playing with their electronic toys; the holiday table is being scavenged for left overs; and Christmas cookie crumbs are in every chair; sofa; and bed in the home.  So........settle down an

Freedom From Want- Norman Rockwell Don DeForge, VMD Silver Sands Veterinary 12November2015 Freedom from Want  is the third in a series of four oil paintings entitled  Four Freedoms  by  Norman Rockwell . They were inspired by  Franklin D. Roosevelt's State of the Union Address , known as  Four Freedoms , delivered to the  77th United States Congress  on January 6, 1941.  In the early 1940s, Roosevelt's Four Freedoms themes were still vague and abstract to many, but the government used them to help boost patriotism.  The Four Freedoms' theme was eventually incorporated into the  Atlantic Charter ,  and it became part of the charter of the  United Nations .  The series of paintings ran in  The Saturday Evening Post  accompanied by essays from noted writers on four consecutive weeks:  Freedom of Speech (February 20),  Freedom of Worship  (February 27),  Freedom from Want  (March 6), and  Freedom from Fear  (March 13). Eventually, the series was widely distributed

Don DeForge, VMD Silver Sands Veterinary Center  31October2015 FINDING RESPECT IN 2015 We are a society without respect!  It has been lost in the home; schools; the workplace; and in our daily interactions with others.  We have created a culture of finding ways to take advantage of others for our own benefit. We have found ways to use the Internet to bully and attack which is easily labeled as criminal.  Children and adults commit suicide because of harassment at school; in the workplace; and in social media. In sports, young athletes are told to win at any cost without any appreciation for good sportsmanship and fair play.  Sports figures are no longer heroes but drug addicts; alcoholics; wife beaters; and PED advocates.  Movies sell that push violence; torture; pain; and repetitious sexual scenarios.  Pornography can be found easily by youth and is visualized by them on their Smart phones on a daily basis. Many would say the above paragraph is the half empty descr

Donald H. DeForge, VMD- Silver Sands Veterinary Center- 19October2015 Making the Golden Years  GOLDEN! At Mrs. Jones party her aged companion, "Dukey" got up with difficulty and walked into the family room.  One of her guests said, "what is wrong with Dukey?"  Mrs. Jones answered, "guess he is just getting old." If we want to make our pets "Golden years GOLDEN", we must do more than excuse abnormal behavior as "just getting old!" Visit your veterinarian and find out why your pet is slowing down.  Many times a physical exam with a few basic lab tests or an x-ray can pinpoint the reason for your pet's poor quality of life.   As we age, we seek a quality of life by consulting with many physicians. Doctors can limit discomfort and make us less painful in our many aging disorders.  The one point I wish to convey in this blog is quite simple....our pets have provided unconditional love; they have been there to s
