For me, understanding the science of weight loss has helped make sense of my own struggles to lose weight, as well as my mother’s endless cycle of dieting, weight gain and despair. I wish she were still here so I could persuade her to finally forgive herself for her dieting failures. While I do, ultimately, blame myself for allowing my weight to get out of control, it has been somewhat liberating to learn that there are factors other than my character at work when it comes to gaining and losing weight. And even though all the evidence suggests that it’s going to be very, very difficult for me to reduce my weight permanently, I’m surprisingly optimistic. I may not be ready to fight this battle this month or even this year. But at least I know what I’m up against.

This article from The Times makes me reflect on the epidemic of OBESITY in our companion animals.  Many veterinarians give up or walk away from the OBESE pet because the OBESE pet many times is connected to an OBESE pet advocate.  It is either to avoid than indirectly offend.
That is sad because without the veterinarian and the pet owner working together the pet stays OBESE.  The human may not be ready to fight the battle this month or even this year....the PET has no choice!  The Human-Animal Bond calls us to help our PET and control weight that can lead to:

If all testing is normal sit down with your local doctor of veterinary medicine and set up a diet that is specific for your pet;s need.  Cats are different than dogs.  Rapid weight loss in cats can lead to serious complications.  Never use starvation diets.


 There are specialists in nutrition to consult if your local doctor feels uncomfortable -Google   -Diplomate American College of Veterinary Nutrition and speak to a specialist about setting up a weight changing appointment.
