You Cannot Stop Time


One of the greatest recent TV series from the UK and seen in America on PBS was the show Doc Martin.  It was the story of a doctor living in pain because he found he had a fear of blood [haemophobia] after becoming a famous surgeon.  He retreats to a small rural village and becomes the local doctor. He is a brilliant diagnostician and the show revolves around his interactions with the local Cornish villagers. Despite his medical brilliance, Doc Martin is grouchy and bad-mannered, and lacks social skills.  He marries the local school teacher and they have a child.  The baby and his lovely wife become a bridge of love and change Doc Martin as he struggles to find himself.


A baby is solely dependent on its parents.  Some individuals have children when they are not prepared to care for themselves.  Others have children to keep relationships safe and have no interest in being a parent.  Then there are the parents that find their child as a miracle that cannot be described by word and cannot be truly painted in any portrait.  The baby is their life and all they want is to be sure that the child grows to be happy each day and in every action of life.


Close your eyes and it is the first day at school.  How could time have gone by so quickly. The child's dependence has been replaced by the energy of wanting to do things on their own and school becomes the first separation from family.  You cannot stop time!

The first day of school is the beginning of independent dependence.  Wanting to be free yet still bonded to Mom and Dad!

As time moves on junior high school students no longer seek parental advice but seek peer support and acceptance. They want to make decisions on their own....they now push the parental control button that says...NO PARENTS NEEDED.....rather than Yes!

High school is the time that tries parent's souls.  Now young people not only do not want parental supervision but they want to seek and explore becoming adults.  Close your eyes: You cannot stop time!

Close your eyes and don't blink it is now college and separation leads to further exploration of the adult world.  Parents who have worried through high school reach greater frustration.  They rely on the fact that they have supplied value systems at a young age and pray that these systems will carry their son and daughter through the college years safely.  You cannot stop time!

Next, the professional years and the search for the dream position in life occurs.  It might be in the corporate world; academics; a trade position; military; medicine; law; science; engineering; investment; finance; or politics.  Close your eyes....the separation gets even greater....open your eyes....you cannot stop time!

The next time a parent closes their eyes their baby is married and have their own children or very separate lives from home. We open our eyes to see grandchildren or two people starting the cycle of life once again.
We question....... have we done all that we should have done to bring to our children positive perceptions; hope; a belief and passion for success; creativity; and the values of caring, sharing, and loving? Do they understand the importance of bringing and giving to others the gift of the essence of love?  We pray..........we ponder.....we close our eyes.....we cannot stop time!
