Dogs house train more easily when you rub their noses in their accidents!
No-No-No!  This can cause a dog to eat their stool.  Punishing leads to a dog hiding their mess somewhere in the home where they think you will not find it.  Reward and give a treat when a pet eliminates in the correct area of the yard.  Punishment leads to problems-reward leads to resolutions and a happy pet.

Dogs wag their tails ONLY when they are happy!
No-No-No! Dogs wag when excited; when afraid; or before a suspected attack by another dog in your pet's safe zone.  Be careful and do not allow a wagging tail to be considered only a sign of happiness. Get to know your dog and watch the tail wag in happiness; stress; fear; and encounter situations.  It is all part of your training program and better understanding the pet-animal bond.

Cats are fish lovers and can live entirely a diet of Salmon; Tuna; and other fish that we have in our home on a regular basis!
No-No-No!  It is true that cats are fish lovers and can always have fresh cooked fish as a treat.  It should not become part of a regular diet and never fed raw.  Long term usage can lead to steatitis or Vitamin E deficiency.  Cats, also, require taurine in their diet and fresh or canned fish doesn't provide this in sufficient amounts for the cat that you love.  Purchase a cat food that states it is AAFCO approved and balanced for your cat.

Cats ONLY PURR when then are HAPPY!
No-No-No!  They do purr when happy but they also purr when ill; when in pain; while giving birth; and even before dying.  Purring can be described as an emotional expression by your cat.  It is not always contentment or happiness.  Love your cat.  Call your veterinarian if your cat is purring but not eating well; purring and not walking well; purring and very inactive.  It will be the best communication you will ever make.  Let your veterinarian be your guide.

Indoor Pets cannot get Parasites or Infections!
No-No-No!  Many viral and bacterial infections are air-borne and can enter your home.  They can be brought into your home on your clothing.  Fleas enter homes commonly this way.  Intestinal parasites can be carried into your home on your shoes.   See your veterinarian if you have an indoor cat that is sneezing or coughing; has diarrhea or vomiting; or if it is itchy or in pain.  Indoor pets can get sick!

Cat Spraying Occurs only in Male and Female Cats that are Not Neutered!
No-No-No!  Urine spraying can occur in both intact males and females and neutered males and females.  Urine marking or spraying can be anxiety or stress related; caused by social conflict between pets or pets and children in the home; territorial with multiple pets in the home; or even a warning with wildlife outside the home that can be noted by the cat within the home.  Urinating outside the litter box can also be caused by medical problems: i.e. urinary tract infections; diabetes; kidney disease; dermatology problems-skin infections-and allergy.......... that make your cat very itchy and uncomfortable.  Do not punish a cat that is spraying.  Go to your animal doctor and have a urinalysis checked and some simple blood tests run to make sure your cat is not being affected by a  medical problem.  Neuter male and female cats.  Be your pet's best friend and realize that marking or urinating outside of the litter pan may be a way they are communicating to you that they need help.
